Atawhai occupies a narrow coastal strip between the hills and Nelson Haven. The suburb’s geography includes rocky and sandy shoreline, eroding cliffs and the northern end of the Boulder Bank, a 13-kilometre natural formation that separates the haven from Tasman Bay. Access to the Boulder Bank is available from Boulder Bank Drive off Atawhai Drive.
