Māpua Skatepark Nelson: Flat Bank Pyramid and Bowl Section on the Ruby Coast

Last updated October 2026

A flat bank pyramid and a small bowl section are the two things that set Māpua Skatepark apart from a plain set of ramps. The park sits on the Māpua Recreation Reserve on Aranui Road, in the coastal village of Māpua on the Ruby Coast north-west of Richmond.

Around those two features you’ll find banks, a small quarter, a flat rail and ledges. The reserve around it has a playground, tennis courts, sports fields, picnic tables and a toilet, so it works well for a family outing where some ride and others play. It has also been one of the stops on the Tasman Skatepark Tour over the years.

About Māpua Skatepark

This is a compact village park rather than a destination bowl. Skate-parks.net lists banks, a small quarter, a flat rail, ledges, transitioned flat banks, a small bowl section and a flat bank pyramid. RideMyPark’s module list matches closely: bank, bowls, rails, quarters, pyramid and ledges.

The mix leans towards street and flow riding. The rail and ledges are there for grinds and slides, the banks and pyramid give riders something to carry speed over, and the small bowl section adds a bit of transition to an otherwise flat-bank layout.

The council’s Ruby Coast walking and cycling map describes the Māpua Recreation Reserve as having picnic tables, a toilet, sports fields, a playground, tennis courts and the skatepark, with the Māpua Bowling Club and Tamaha Scouts also based on the reserve.

Competition History

Māpua has been a regular round of the Tasman Skatepark Tour, the free summer series for skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter riders run for Tasman District Council.

A council release for the 2016 tour put the Māpua round at the skatepark on a January evening, and a Sport Tasman preview of another year’s tour listed Māpua among the rounds before a finale in Nelson. Venues change from year to year, so check the council’s Skatepark Series page for the current schedule.
