About Eves Valley Walk

Eves Valley Scenic Reserve covers 28 hectares of regenerating beech-podocarp forest. DOC describes it as one of the few remaining lowland valley floor forest remnants in the Waimea and Moutere areas, which makes this short walk more special than its length suggests.

Beech, podocarp and broadleaved species dominate the forest. DOC notes that tawa reaches its western geographic limit in this reserve.

The streams and pools hold a diverse mix of native fish, including threatened species such as the short-jaw kōkopu. Weed control work on old man’s beard and wilding pines has given the forest room to recover, and DOC says natural regeneration is flourishing.

The reserve has many picnic areas, so the walk pairs well with a lunch stop. Expect to cross unbridged streams along the way.

Streams and Track Conditions

The walk crosses unbridged streams. In normal flows DOC says these are easily crossed, but in floods or high flows they can become impassable and you will need to wait for the water to drop. Assess every stream carefully before crossing. If in doubt, stay out.

Wasps are present in the reserve and are particularly common from December until April, so carry antihistamine if you are allergic to their stings.

Know Before You Go

Camping is prohibited in the reserve. Fires are not permitted, and neither are four-wheel bikes or motorbikes. Check the DOC page for alerts before you go and tell someone your plans.
