Freshwater: Fish & Game licence needed (Nelson/Marlborough). Seasons, bag limits and methods vary by water. Check the Fish & Game regulations.

Last updated November 2026

The Whangamoa River is a small, clear river over a rocky bed, about 30 minutes’ drive from Nelson. It holds brown trout in low numbers, generally 2 to 4 lb, and the clear water lets you spot them before you cast.

State Highway 6 follows much of the river, and Kokorua Road runs down the valley to the lower reaches and the Kokorua estuary. It is open from 1 October to 30 April for fly and spinner only. Most of the lower bank is farmland, so ask the landowner before you cross private land.

River conditions

No tides above the inlet. Flow is what matters on this small, clear river: check the gauge on the Collins River, a Whangamoa tributary, after rain.

What to Expect

The Whangamoa is about 22 km long. It rises in the northern Bryant Range, about 15 km north-east of central Nelson, and flows generally north-east to Tasman Bay near the north-eastern end of Delaware Bay. It is one of the larger rivers in the Nelson region, averaging about 2 cubic metres a second near the Collins River confluence.

The upper catchment is mostly protection and production forest. Further down, the valley floor is farmed, with native bush and pine plantation on the slopes and ridges, and the lower river winds north through a narrow strip of paddocks with Kokorua Road beside it.

At the coast the river flows into the Kokorua estuary at the Whangamoa Inlet. Īnanga spawn there in a significant remnant of alluvial forest, and the river mouth has the best remaining natural dune system in Tasman Bay. Tread lightly around the estuary margins.

For anglers it is a river of few fish but good ones. The water is clear, the banks have good vegetation cover for the trout, and the lower reaches are the more attractive water.

How to Fish the Whangamoa River

Sight fishing

With low numbers of fish in clear water, this is a river for walking slowly and looking before you cast. Fish hold near the cover along the banks. The headwaters are hard to fish, and the lower reaches are easier and easy to wade.

When to go

The season runs from 1 October to 30 April, and the river fishes best early or late in that season. Check the weather for Nelson and the nearby flow gauge on the Collins River after rain.

What to use

  • Nymphs: size 14 or smaller, such as Hare and Copper, Pheasant Tail and caddis imitations.
  • Dry flies: small Hardy’s Favourite, Dad’s Favourite and March Brown.
  • Wet flies: Greenwell’s Glory, March Brown and emerger sedge patterns such as the Invicta, fished under the surface.
  • Spinners: small bladed spinners.

Getting There and Facilities

  • From Nelson: take State Highway 6 towards Blenheim, about 30 minutes’ drive. The highway follows much of the river through the forested upper valley.
  • Lower reaches: turn off SH6 onto Kokorua Road, which runs down the valley beside the river. Paddocks run along both sides, so most of the bank is behind farm fences.
  • Public access: check the Fish & Game Nelson-Marlborough access map and the Herenga ā Nuku outdoor access maps for marked public access before you go. Where there is none, you must get the landholder’s permission to cross private land.
  • Parking: park well off the road and clear of gateways and farm tracks.
  • Supplies: buy food, fuel and your licence in Nelson. Licences are sold online by Fish & Game and by the agents in Nelson listed on its website.

Rules and Safety

  • Licence: you need a Fish & Game licence. Children under 12 get a free licence, but they still need one.
  • Season and methods: the Whangamoa is not listed separately in the 2026/27 Nelson/Marlborough regulations, in force from 1 October 2026, so the regional default applies: open 1 October to 30 April, fly and spin only.
  • Limits: check the daily bag in the current Fish & Game Nelson/Marlborough regulations before you keep a fish.
  • Gear: felt-soled waders and boots are banned. Check, clean and dry your gear before moving to another river.
  • Private land: ask before crossing farmland, leave stock and gates alone, and follow the Outdoor Access Code.
  • Toxic algae: Nelson City Council’s toxic algae monitoring covers the Maitai, Wakapuaka and Poorman Valley Stream, not the Whangamoa. In low, warm summer flows look for dark slime or mats on the rocks and keep dogs out of the water if you see them.
  • Estuary: Fish & Game’s rules count estuary waters as freshwater for trout. Sea species in Tasman Bay follow MPI’s Challenger rules, and no licence is needed for sea fishing.
