About Buxton Carpark

Buxton Carpark occupies a central position in Nelson, making it ideal for visitors who want easy access to the city’s cafes, galleries, and weekend market without needing a car for daily exploration. The site forms part of Nelson’s network of designated freedom camping locations managed under the 2025 Responsible Camping Bylaw.

Only vehicles with a valid self-containment certificate issued under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 may use the 20 dedicated self-contained spaces. A further 10 spaces are available for non-self-contained vehicles. All campers must remain within marked or signposted areas and keep their vehicle and belongings within one parking space.

The maximum stay is two consecutive nights on no more than two separate occasions in any calendar month. Freedom camping is not permitted outside these rules, and normal paid parking charges apply during daytime hours on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Tents are not allowed at this location.

Montgomery and Wakatu Car Parks

Montgomery Carpark at 35 Montgomery Square takes up to 31 certified self-contained vehicles, with the same two-night limit. There is no camping on Friday and Saturday nights, when the square hosts the weekend market. The Superloo nearby has paid toilets, showers and laundry.

Wakatu Carpark on Wakatu Square, off Wakatu Lane, has up to 19 spaces for certified self-contained vehicles only. Camping is allowed from 10pm to 7am, normal parking charges apply during the day, and the area is under a 24-hour liquor ban. Public toilets are nearby.

All three car parks follow the Responsible Camping Bylaw 2025: stay within marked spaces, no tents, and no more than two consecutive nights on two occasions in a calendar month.

Freedom Camping Regulations

Nelson City Council actively enforces the Responsible Camping Bylaw 2025. Vehicles must display a valid self-containment certificate. The council provides an online map and on-site signage to show exact permitted areas. Campers are required to leave sites clean and tidy with no trace of their stay.

Normal parking fees and time limits apply outside overnight camping hours. Council rangers patrol regularly, and breaches attract a $400 fine under the Freedom Camping Act.

Amenities and Facilities

Public toilets are available nearby with 24-hour access. Showers, laundry, and changing facilities are located at the Montgomery Carpark Superloo a short walk away. Free drinking water taps and city Wi-Fi are accessible in the central area.

Rubbish and recycling must be taken to the Pascoe Street Transfer Station or other designated facilities; a free public dump station operates at NPD on St Vincent Street for wastewater.
