Mahana near Nelson: Settlement Guide to Moutere Hills Living

Last updated October 2026

Mahana is a rural settlement in the Tasman District, set in the Moutere Hills to the west of Nelson. It belongs to the Upper Moutere area: clay hills, lifestyle blocks, orchards and vineyards, not a town centre with a main street. Tasman District Council administers the locality, so Mahana is near Nelson rather than inside Nelson City.

Everyday life turns on country roads and Mahana School, with shops, the inlet and the coast a short drive away at Māpua. The name is a te reo Māori word for warmth, a meaning the local school uses as part of its identity.

About Mahana

Mahana sits inland from Tasman Bay, on the eastern side of the Moutere Hills above the Māpua coast. The ground is the heavy Moutere clay that has long supported orchards and, more recently, small vineyards.

Houses and small farms are spread along roads such as Old Coach Road, Mahana School Road, George Harvey Road and Carlyon Road, rather than gathered around a village green.

There is no town centre in Mahana itself. The nearest cluster of shops, cafés and everyday services is Māpua, on the coast. Richmond and Motueka are the larger towns for supermarkets, health services and secondary schooling. Nelson is reached by heading east through Richmond and onto State Highway 6.

The community focus is Mahana School, a state co-educational full primary for Years 1 to 8 at 15 Mahana School Road. The Education Review Office describes it as a rural school in Upper Moutere, and a member of Kāhui Ako ki Motueka. In a settlement with few public buildings, the school is the main local meeting point.

The wider Upper Moutere district has a longer farming history, including 19th-century German settlement centred on Sarau, now Upper Moutere. Mahana shares that rural setting.

Today the hills mix horticulture with grape growing and people who live here and travel out for work. It is quiet, hilly and residential in a country sense, not a visitor precinct with its own attractions.

Getting Around

Most trips are by car. Mahana is reached from State Highway 60, known locally as the Coastal Highway between Richmond and Motueka, or from the Moutere Highway, then along local roads including Old Coach Road and Mahana School Road. These roads serve houses and farms. Some are narrow, and they are not a through-route in their own right.

The settlement is not on a rail line or a ferry route. Regional bus connections, where they run, are in the larger centres of Nelson, Richmond and Motueka rather than along the local hill roads. Allow extra time on school days around Mahana School Road, when the rural road is busier for a short period.

Getting Outdoors

Mahana itself is open hill country rather than a place with a town reserve at its centre. The easy change of scene is a short drive to the Māpua waterfront and the Māpua inlet, where the coast, the wharf and flat paths sit below the hills. On a clear day the Moutere Hills look out toward Tasman Bay.

Local roads are quiet enough for careful cycling, but they are working rural roads with limited shoulders. For a flatter ride or a waterside walk, Māpua is the practical starting point. There is no formed public track network published for the settlement itself.

History and Heritage

The place name is the te reo Māori word mahana, meaning warmth. Mahana School uses that meaning directly. Its site greeting asks visitors to hold their mahanatanga close to the heart and go out to thrive in the world. The school stands at 15 Mahana School Road, with a postal address in Upper Moutere.

The hills around the school were farmed and planted long before lifestyle blocks became common on this side of Tasman Bay. Fruit from the Moutere coast historically moved out through the port at Māpua.

Vineyards now share the clay with remaining orchards. That working landscape has not produced a commercial strip in Mahana. The settlement remains residential and rural, with the school as its clearest public landmark.
