About Lake Rotoiti Circuit

The Lake Rotoiti Circuit follows the Lakehead Track along the eastern shore and the Lakeside Track along the western shore, returning via Mt Robert Road or lakeside paths. The route passes through dense beech forest with mosses, ferns and occasional red rātā in summer. Lake Rotoiti was formed by glacial activity, and the surrounding mountains continue to erode slowly into the lake.

From Kerr Bay, the Lakehead Track reaches Lakehead Hut in about three hours. A river crossing of the Travers River or a longer detour via swingbridge leads to Coldwater Hut. The Lakeside Track then heads north, passing a short side track to Whisky Falls roughly one hour from Coldwater Hut. The final section returns to Kerr Bay along the road or lakeside path.

The circuit offers swimming spots in warmer months and good opportunities for birdwatching. Walkers should carry warm, waterproof clothing, insect repellent for sandflies, and be prepared for wasps in summer. No rubbish facilities are provided on the track.

Walking the Full Circuit

The full loop is typically completed as a long day walk or as an overnight tramp. Many walkers use a water taxi to shorten the journey by being dropped at Lakehead Hut or Coldwater Hut and walking back to Kerr Bay. The track includes gentle undulations, forest sections, occasional scree slopes and one notable river crossing that can be impassable after heavy rain.

Information boards at Kerr Bay provide distances and estimated times for each segment. GPS or topographic maps are recommended, and conditions can change quickly in this alpine environment.

Other Walking Tracks around Lake Rotoiti

Several shorter walks start from Kerr Bay or nearby points. The Honeydew Walk and Bellbird Walk offer easy forest strolls suitable for families. The Brunner Peninsula Nature Walk provides lakeside views on a shorter loop. The Robert Ridge Route and Mount Robert Circuit offer more challenging options with panoramic views for experienced walkers.

These tracks allow visitors to tailor their experience, from gentle lakeside strolls to steeper alpine routes within the same national park.

Facilities and Camping

Lakehead Hut provides 28 bunks with mattresses, a wood burner and non-flush toilets. Coldwater Hut is a smaller serviced hut with similar basic facilities. Water from tanks must be boiled before drinking. Bookings for huts are recommended during peak season.

Kerr Bay Campsite offers powered and unpowered sites for tents, caravans and campervans. Facilities include token-operated hot showers, flush toilets, a cooking shelter and laundry. Bookings are required year-round. West Bay Campsite provides additional lakeside options during the main season.
